Can Cats Eat Waffles – Concerns & Important Facts

Can Cats Eat Waffles – Concerns & Important Facts

When it comes to breakfast, we have lots of options: eggs, bagels, pancakes, and even waffles. If you plan to make waffles, then you might have your cat, your helper, right by your side. As you finish your hardy breakfast, you might wonder: can cats eat waffles?

Cats can eat waffles without serious effects, but you should not get into the habit of feeding your cat waffles because they are not suitable for cats to eat regularly.

Like many foods that are “human foods,” waffles are not the best choice to share with your cat, small pieces of waffles will not kill your hurt, but that doesn’t mean they’re healthy. If you’re looking to learn more, keep on reading until the end!

Can I Feed My Cat Waffles

Yes, you can feed your cat waffles.

When we think about foods we can feed cats, we often think about if the food can kill your cat.

Some foods can shockingly be toxic to cats. This means that they can poison and quickly kill your cat.

Every cat owner wants to avoid those foods!

Waffles, thankfully, don’t fall under that category, so you can safely feed your cat waffles.

Just because waffles aren’t toxic, however, doesn’t mean that they are healthy for your cat.

We’ll cover the ingredients in waffles soon, but I want to note here that very few of the ingredients are necessary for a balanced diet for a cat.

Can I Feed My Cat Waffles With Syrup

You should avoid feeding your cat waffles with syrup.

It is important to note that syrup isn’t toxic to cats either. Syrup will not kill your cat.

This is to say that your cat shouldn’t be eating syrup, even if it isn’t toxic to your cat.

Syrup is full of sugar, which your cat doesn’t need in his diet.

This is very similar to humans – we shouldn’t be eating syrup either!

If you’re tempted to feed your cat waffles, it is better to do so without the syrup.

Waffles will never be healthy for your cat, but the syrup is just a worse addition.

Are Waffles Poisonous To Cats

Waffles are not poisonous to cats.

I’ve already mentioned this, but waffles aren’t poisonous to cats.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you should go adding waffles into your cat’s diet.

Even though waffles aren’t toxic, they can lead to negative consequences on your cat’s health.

Here are some impacts waffles can have on your cat’s diet:

  • Weight gain due to additional, unnecessary sugar
  • Stomach ache from ingredients, especially milk
  • Expectation that he will get “people” food all the time
  • Dull coat from lack of nutrients

What Ingredients Are In Waffles

Although every recipe can have variations, there are a few main ingredients in the average waffle recipe:

Ingredient In WafflesAmount
Sugar1 Tablespoon
Flour2 Cups
Eggs2 Large
Milk1 3/4 Cups
Vegetable Oil1/2 Cup
Baking Powder4 Tablespoons
Vanilla Extract1/2 Teapoon
Salt1/4 Teaspoon
This table shows a list of ingredients in waffles

Some recipes may also call for additional seasonings for flavor, like cinnamon.

You can also add extras to waffles, either in the recipe or on top, like fruit, chocolate chips, and whipped cream.

What Happens If A Cat Eats Waffles

Let’s explore some of the health effects of waffles, namely weight gain, and the stomach ache.

First, I want to talk about weight gain.

Take a look at those ingredients in waffles once more; none of those recipes are going to be on the cat food bag.

Cats shouldn’t be eating any of those ingredients because cats don’t need them in their diets.

These are known as empty calories; your cat can’t use them to turn into useful energy, so it’s stored as fat.

Second, waffles can lead to stomach aches.

Cats are lactose intolerant, and even the small amount of milk in waffles can make your cat sick, particularly if your cat doesn’t ever have milk.

Some cats will be fine after eating a small amount of milk, but there are some cats will have an upset stomach from it.

What Happens If My Cat Accidentally Eats Waffles

You should not worry if your cat accidentally eats waffles.

We’ve covered that waffles aren’t poisonous, so you shouldn’t worry if a cat accidentally sneaks some waffles.

I think every cat owner has been there once. You leave a plate of food unattended in the kitchen or living room, and there’s a bite missing when you return!

It can be concerning to know that your cat ate something that he shouldn’t have.

But you don’t need to worry!

If your cat eats some of your waffles, you don’t have to rush to the vet with your cat.

A cat that isn’t used to human food could get a bit of a stomach ache after eating waffles. He might throw up or have a bout of diarrhea, but it won’t be long until he feels like his old self!

Alternatives To Waffles

There are alternatives to feed your cat when you’re eating waffles.

You should avoid waffles at all times, but there are things that you can give your cat instead to keep him happy.

Waffles With Fewer Ingredients

Now, this one is going to require some research on your part, but you can make waffles with fewer ingredients that are healthier for your cat.

Some people love to cook for their cats, and so recipes exist that are better for your cats.

These waffles are going to leave out the dairy milk since cats are lactose intolerant.

Most recipes won’t call for sugar either; sugar is just empty calories for your cat.

These recipes will sound bland for humans, but they make for a more healthy treat for your cat.

Cat Treats When You Eat Breakfast

You can trick your cat when you’re eating your breakfast waffles.

Instead of giving your cat a corner piece of your waffle, sneak a cat treat for your cat instead.

Your cat will feel like part of the family, but you won’t be feeding your cat empty calories.

With all the cat treats on the market, you might be able to find a treat that is soft and flat – making it look like a cat treat.

Cat Food When You Eat Breakfast

Cat food is another good alternative to slip your cat when you’re about to eat breakfast.

Sometimes your cat wants to be involved; he may not necessarily want what you’re exactly.

Fill up your cat’s food bowl when you’re reading to eat. Make it special by giving your cat wet food rather than the run of the mill dry food that he may usually eat.

Cat food is nowhere near the same as waffles, but it makes your cat food the same and like part of the family.

Give Your Cat The Toppings

No, no. I don’t mean that you should give your cat whipped cream or syrup, but some of the fruit toppings for your waffles are good for cats.

Instead of giving your cat a piece of the waffle, offer your cat small pieces of the fruit that you might pile on top.

Here are some fruits that are great for cats to eat:

  • Bananas
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Cranberries

Your cat won’t get any of those harmful ingredients in waffles, but he’ll still have his “breakfast” with you.
