Cats do weird things that are sometimes confusing and hard to explain. One of those habits is staring at you upside down, whether rolling around on the floor or hanging like a monkey from his cat tree. Every time your cat does this, you probably ask, Why does my cat look at me upside down?
Your cat looks at you upside down when they are happy and relaxed in your home. Temperature regulation, being playful, relieving digestive issues, and attention are all reasons cats look at you while upside down.
Every cat has odd quirks, and cats seem to enjoy looking at their owners upside down. Even though this list isn’t exhaustive, it could give you a good idea of why your cat is looking at you. Keep reading to learn more and (hopefully!) understand your cat’s behavior.

1. Your Cat Is Is Happy
When your cat becomes happy and relaxed, he’ll start to act goofy around you.
Every cat owner has probably seen the change with every cat they’ve brought home.
At first, your cat will be scared and timid around you, but he’ll slowly begin to warm up to you and his new surroundings. As he does so, his personality will begin to flourish.
That personality may be a little bit goofy.
So, when your cat rolls around and looks at you upside down, it’s just one of his ways to show you that he is happy and relaxed in his new home!
In this case, you’ll have to get used to one saying that every cat owner knows by heart: “What are you doing, you goofball?”
Plus, a cat that shows you his belly knows that he can be defenseless around you. As an instinct, cats do not show their belly to people they don’t trust.
2. Contentedness
Cats can be happy and relaxed, but they can also be content when they’re in your presence, so they look at you.
This point doesn’t have any super deep meaning to you as a cat owner, but it does give you the warm fuzzies if you think about it.
Your cat could be content when they’re around you, so they spend some time looking at you.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget that your cat loves you as much as you love them (even if you have a cat that isn’t the most loving and good at showing affection).
While your cat is staring at you, watch at how he blinks.
Slow, steady blinks are believed to be a way that your cat also shows you love and affection.
Humans don’t show their affection like that, but don’t overlook those slow blinks from your cat – it’s a great thing, after all!
If you want to return the favor to your cat, you can slow blink right back at your cat to let him know you love him too.
3. Temperature Regulation
Cats sleep and lay all curled up to regulate their body temperature; if he looks at you in this position, he may happen to have his head upside down!
Just about every cat has a coat of fur, but that doesn’t mean it’s always enough to keep him warm.
To stay warmer, your cat will curl up on himself and sleep with his head upside down. You might notice that he curls up even tighter and tucks his head into his chest or legs.
This is your cat’s way of keeping himself warm!
Keeping their heads close to their body is just another way that they can stay warm.
On the other hand, your cat may roll over onto his side or back to get a cool breeze on his belly on a hot summer day.
Every cat loves to lay in the sun, but it can become too much for any cat when it’s summer.
A cat’s fur is great in the winter, but it can make them hot in the summer, too, especially if your cat has long fur.
Regardless of whether your cat keeps warm or cool, he may poke his eyes open while his head is upside down to check on what you’re doing.

4. Confusion or Curiosity
Sometimes your cat will look at you upside down if he is confused or curious.
This one will be more sudden, so let me paint a picture you might have seen in your house before.
Your cat is asleep. Let’s say he’s on the couch, on his pet, or even in his cat perch.
You do something that makes a loud, sudden noise. Maybe you drop something in the kitchen or play a video on your phone without realizing that the sound is up.
It may startle you, but it’ll give your cat a start, too, thus waking him up from his nap.
His head pops up from wherever he is, and his head may even tilt to the side. His head could be upside down as he gives you a sleepy look.
In this case, your cat is just trying to figure out what all the noise and commotion is all about!
5. Your Cat Is In Heat
Your cat could be rolling around and even looking at you upside if your cat is in heat.
Female cats will roll around on the ground when they are in heat.
If you’re anything like me, the time that your cat is in heat is one of the sleepless nights. Your cat may cry and howl, pace around, and even roll around more than usual.
You might wonder why she’s rolling around like that.
As I mentioned, she’s looking to attract male cats to mate with, even if she’s the only cat in your house.
Your cat isn’t looking at you for any particular reason in this case; she may like to look at you and does so while she’s trying to find her next mate.
Most people agree that cats are in heat for about six days, so there’s a good chance you’ll get stared at while your cat is upside down at least once.
It is difficult to stop your cat from rolling around and looking at you while she is in heat.
Unfortunately, one of the best – though potentially costly – solutions to this is getting your cat fixed.
A cat that is spayed will no longer do things like this.
6. Looking For Relief From Stomach Issues
We’ve all been there when we have a stomachache. You want to roll onto your back with a big groan and hope that your stomach stops hurting.
Well, your cat is doing the same thing when he rolls on his back and looks at you.
Of course, there will be little indication of this unless your cat shows signs of discomfort. For instance, he might have had diarrhea in the litter box or threw up after eating.
The best thing you can do to help a cat with an upset stomach is to leave him be and make sure that he has fresh, cool water.
After all, you probably don’t want to be picked up and squeezed when you feel like you might throw up, right?
Your cat feels the same!
Your cat may start staring at you when he is in this position because he feels better seeing you there. You are like a source of comfort to your cat, which has probably become apparent from the earlier points I’ve made.
7. Looking For Attention
Your cat could be looking at you upside down for attention.
I know, I know. This one sounds strange, doesn’t it? How could staring be how your cat shows you that he wants attention.
I hate to say it, but you’re already giving your cat more attention than you think. You’re looking at your cat, look at you, aren’t you?! You’re already giving your cat half of what he wants.
Cats have dozens of ways to show you that they want attention. Some will chirp, some will start to do naughty things, and others yet will give you that wide-eyed stare.
Your cat is trying to get you to give him attention when he stares. If you look hard enough, you’ll probably be able to see the anticipation in your cat’s eyes.
He’s waiting for you to come to him.
Your cat could want food, treats, or just someone to play with to get rid of some energy.
Ignoring your cat can result in two outcomes.
He could go about what he wanted to do on his own. He might pick up one of his toys to entertain himself.
Your cat could also try to get your attention in other ways. He may start to make noises to catch your attention or, worse yet, start to get destructive!

8. Your Cat Is Showing You Affection
Even though your cat may be looking at you for attention, it can also be an overall sign of affection.
Now, we’ve already talked about how cats will look at you when they’re happy, relaxed, and content.
We covered the infamous slow blinking from your cat.
In this section, let’s pull back a little. Not every action from your cat needs to have some deep meaning behind it.
Sometimes your cat is just enjoying your company and looks at you as a way to show it.
Your cat probably enjoys your company and uses this as a way to let you know that he likes having you around.
Cats get a bad wrap for being anti-social and unloving, and if that was the case, then your cat would have stayed in another room or walked away from you.
Your cat may be on the other side of the room from you, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like having you somewhere nearby.
Now, I said we wouldn’t be getting too deep in this section, but this is enough to show you that even the grumpiest cat around likes to be near you.
9. Your Cat Feels Secure
This goes back to what we mentioned earlier about your cat feeling safe, so let’s touch on that in more detail here.
Cats don’t show their bellies to just anyone, so you should feel special!
Your cat’s ancestors – and even tigers today – have to be on high alert to protect themselves.
If you’re lying on your back, then you can’t get up quickly to defend yourself if you are attacked.
Your cat isn’t going to lay on their back if they feel unsafe or think that it may be attacked.
A comfortable enough cat to roll onto his back and look at you is telling you that he doesn’t think anything will happen to him.
If anything, he also knows that you will protect him.
Such a small gesture can sure mean a lot, huh?
10. Your Cat Wants A Staring Match
I know you’ve been there before.
Your cat starts to stare at you. Your instinct is to stare back into the large eyes.
Your cat becomes so focused that you can see her shake with how still she is trying to stay.
I’m terrible at these staring competitions, so my cats are usually the clear winners.
Your cat could start a staring match even while staring at you upside down, though she might flip over as it continues.
Most people say that you should not engage in staring competitions with your cat because they see it as a sign of hostility.
I’ve heard this myself, but I’ll let you in on a little secret: I do it more often than I would like to admit.
After all, it’s only a little friendly competition with my cats, and they never seem to mind.
