Are Brown Cats Rare – Everything You Should Know!

Are Brown Cats Rare – Everything You Should Know!

Some people find that they are attracted to a cat of a specific color for various reasons. For instance, maybe you like black cats because they remind you of your childhood cat, or maybe you always wear white, so a white cat will fit your lifestyle. You may even be someone who wants a brown cat, but you ask: are brown cats rare?

Brown cats are rare. The fawn color variant is considered the rarest brown coat color in cats and is only found in purebred cat. Due to their rarity, brown cats are more expensive than cats with other coat colors.

Brown cats are not the easiest color of cat to find if you are looking for a solid brown cat, but it is not impossible. Thankfully, you do not have to give up hope before you begin. Stick with me until the end to learn why brown cats are rarer than other colored cats!

Is An All Brown Cat Rare

An all-brown cat will be one of the rare colors of cat.

We are tempted to color every cat we draw with a brown color when we’re children.

When you picture a cat, you might even picture them with brown fur, but the reality of the matter is that all brown cats are pretty rare to find.

Most brown cats that have a more chocolatey brown fur descend from brown Siamese cats, which means that very few cats have a brown coat, whether you are thinking of dark brown, almost black fur, or chocolate brown fur.

If you have a black cat with a thick undercoat, you might even wonder if your black cat is brown. Some cats have a lighter undercoat that looks chocolatey brown in some lighting.

I know this from experience. I have an all-black, long-haired cat, but you can see patches of brown fur when he is sitting in the direct sunlight. He looks brown in the winter when his undercoat is entirely brown grown in.

Are Chocolate Brown Cats Rare

Yes, chocolate brown cats are rare.

Someone on the hunt for a chocolate brown cat will have to be on the hunt for a while because they are so rare.

As previously mentioned, chocolate brown cats come from Siamese cats, which seriously limits the number of brown cats that are that color.

Since Siamese cats are purebred cats, it is rare that the cat has bred with cats outside of the breed; therefore, the gene has not spread much.

Even though a chocolate brown cat is rare, they are not impossible to find. Your search, however, may take longer than you expect.

You may be able to find a chocolate brown cat at a shelter if you are patient, but one of the easiest ways to find a cat of a specific color is to find one through a breeder.

What Is The Rarest Color Of Cat

Although you’re not going to find a lot of chocolate cats out in the world, brown is not the rarest color of cat.

The rarest color of cat to find is an albino cat, though this may not be surprising to you.

Cats are albino when they have a gene that makes them such. The gene that creates albino cats means that the cat cannot produce melanin in their skin.

Without melanin, your cat’s skin will not have color, and neither will their fur. This means that the cat will have white fur with no other colorings or markings like most other cats.

What Breed Of Cats Are Chocolate Brown

Brown might not seem like a difficult color of cat to find, but only a few breeds of cat can be considered brown.

Havana Brown

If we are going to get technical, you’ll need to know that the Havana Brown breed is the only breed that is truly chocolate brown.

If you’re committed to a chocolate brown coat on your cat, then you’re going to have to do your research and find a Havana Brown to adopt or purchase.

Never fear, though! The Havana Brown has a wonderful personality and is loyal and committed to its family.

Burmese

The Burmese will not be a solid chocolate brown like the Havana Brown, but you can find Burmese cats with brown fur.

The fur on a Burmese may be different colors and variations of brown, but there will be that color that you’re seeking too.

You’ll find that the Burmese have a gorgeous personality to match its beautiful fur. Most Burmese cats are social and have a lot of energy. If you want a cat that’s always ready to play, then the Burmese might be for you!

Oriental Shorthair or Oriental Longhair

You might think of an Oriental’s big ears when you picture them, but the Oriental Longhair and Oriental Shorthair can also come in chocolate brown.

There is no standard color to the Oriental Shorthair and Longhair, which means that you may be able to find them in chocolate brown if you are on the hunt.

Of the three cat breeds we’ve covered today, the Oriental will be the most vocal of the bunch. If you’re looking for a cat that’s brown and likes to have a good conversation, then you should consider this breed to get everything you’re looking for!

Although we’ve covered specific cat breeds here, it is also possible that you may stumble upon a cat at your local shelter that is brown and is of no particular breed. Sometimes finding the perfect cat is about the hunt!

How Much Is A Brown Cat Worth

Since we said that the Havana Brown is the one cat that is truly brown, we’ll focus on that breed here.

While you may be able to find a purebred Havana Brown at the shelter with good luck, the chances are that you will not be able to find one locally.

You will need to work with a breeder to find a Havana Brown; you might even have to search for a Havana Brown nationally.

Since the Havana Brown is not a common breed, you can expect that a kitten will cost you anywhere from $800 to $1,500.

The price is dictated by several factors, including:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Markings and quality of fur
  • Breeder and their location

The Havana Brown is not a cheap breed, but if you are truly committed to a brown cat, the investment may be well worth it for you.
