When you’re looking to adopt or purchase a new cat, you may find yourself considering the question, Can brown cats have blue eyes?

Brown cats can have blue eyes. All cats are born with blue eyes, but they will usually change as the cat gets older. While it may be possible that your brown cat will have blue eyes, it is very unlikely in adulthood.

Next time you look at a brown cat, take a look into their eyes.

Yes, it is rare for a full-grown cat to have blue eyes. 

When a kitten is born, you’ll notice that most of them have blue eyes. Interestingly, cats are not born with pigment in their eyes, which means that they have blue eyes.

Most cats, however, do not keep their blue eyes. This means that it is rare to see a full-grown cat to have blue eyes.

At about six weeks old, your cat’s eyes will usually start to change into the color they will be when they are older.

Some cats, of course, will keep their blue eyes, but rarely, your cat will still have blue eyes at one year or even three months old. 

What Is The Rarest Eye Color In Cats

The rarest color eye color in cats is an orangey amber color. 

Although we mentioned that orange-colored eyes are common in brown cats, a true amber with hints of orange is the rarest eye color in cats.

If you want an example of the eye color I mean (because the difference is nuanced), look up pictures of a British Blue Shorthair.

The British Blue Shorthair has a striking amber-colored eye that pops against their grey, almost blue-toned fur. 

This eye color is so rare in cats because you will only find it in this specific cat breed. Chances are, the random stray cat in your neighborhood will not have the same eye color.

Again, this difference may seem very minor to you (and even to me!), but this will be the color of eye that you will see the least in all cats.

What Eye Color Is Most Common In Cats

The most common eye color in cats is a copper color.

When you look at most cats, you’ll probably notice that they have coppery colored eyes. 

We talked about how the lack of melanin in cats can produce blue eyes, and the opposite is true for cats with brown eyes.

Melanin will also make brown eyes. More melanin means that your cat will have darker colored eyes. 

As your cat gets older, you will notice that their copper eyes will get darker and darker, though this is not something to worry about. 

Although your cat’s copper-colored eyes may be beautiful, they are unfortunately not rare or unique. 

Brown Cat Breeds With Blue Eyes

When you start to look at purebred, certain traits will begin to pop up, including the rare blue-eyed brown cat.

Even though purebred cats can have certain traits, it will be challenging to find a solid brown cat with blue eyes.

The following are brown-colored cats that have blue eyes.

Siamese 

Most people think of the Siamese cat first when they think of a cat with blue eyes.

Siamese cats usually do not come in solid brown, but what we call “pointed” Siamese cats have brown faces, ears, legs, and tails. The rest of their body may be a light to medium tan color that pairs well with its pointed features. 

I think of Siamese cats as one of the most intelligent breeds, and they’re curious. I’ve rarely met a Siamese cat that doesn’t like to yell at its owners either. 

Physically speaking, I cannot overlook how skinny and tall they look!

Balinese

Balinese cats look almost like long-haired Siamese cats. Balinese cats came about because of a mutation from Siamese cats!

The Balinese cat can come in brown and have bright blue eyes. 

If you have kids, they are a great breed because they’re smart and love to play, so they will provide hours of entertainment for your kids. 

The Balinese may make a better family pet than your traditional Siamese cat. 

Persian

Persian cats come in many different colors, but it is possible to find one that is brown with its beautiful blue eyes. A Persian that isn’t white will be harder to find, but it is not impossible.

I always think of their flat faces and crazy whiskers when I think of a Persian. While I don’t love this, you might think it’s adorable!

Some families have Persian cats, but I would recommend this breed for someone who does not have many other responsibilities.

Persians are a loving breed, but with their thick, long fur and preference to relax, you’ll be spending time brushing and sitting with this cat!

Ragdoll

The Ragdoll is one of the calmest cat breeds that you’ll find, and you may even be able to find one with brown fur and blue eyes!

Most Ragdoll cats have long hair, which comes in various colors. You probably won’t be able to find a Ragdoll with solid brown fur, but you’ll undoubtedly be able to find one with brown markings.

The Ragdoll will be able to provide hours of entertainment for you and your family because they are social and energetic.
