7 Gravy Recipes For Cats – Fresh Homemade Options!

If you are looking to make some gravy for your cat, look no further! Whether you want a recipe to use up some leftovers or are aiming to make your cat gravy from scratch, there is undoubtedly a recipe for you.

Most of these recipes are more straightforward than you would expect. As long as you have a pot, water, some form of protein, and a pinch of salt, you’re already halfway to becoming a cat chef!

1. Chicken Gravy

Cats love chicken! You can use leftover scraps from your own chicken for this recipe. Increase the quantities to make more chicken gravy.

Ingredients

  • Chicken gizzard and white meat chicken, skinless when possible – ½ cup
  • Water – 2 cups
  • All-purpose flour – 2 tbsp.
  • Salt – ¼ tsp.

Directions

  1. Make sure chicken and any chicken parts are thoroughly cooked. Do not use spices when cooking.
  2. Add chicken to a saucepan with water. Add flour while stirring. Add salt.
  3. Stir until gravy is thick. Note: If your gravy is not thick enough or is too thick, continue adding water and flour until the desired consistency is reached.
  4. Cool and add to your cat’s meal.
  5. Store in the fridge for up to three days or freeze to allow the freshness to last.

2. Leftover Meat Recipe

If you have leftover portions of your dinner – chicken, pork, or beef – try this recipe!

You can choose one kind of protein or mix them all together. This is especially great if you’re cleaning out the fridge and don’t want to see anything go to waste. The best part about this recipe is that you can use all the scraps you may have, too, like skin and bones.

Ingredients

  • Protein of choice, including skin and bones – 1 cup (can use what is on hand)
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Salt – ¼ tsp.

Directions

  1. Make sure chicken and any chicken parts are thoroughly cooked.
  2. Add protein to a stockpot with water. Add more water to your pot if necessary.
  3. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to a medium or soft boil. Place lid on stockpot and let simmer for up to 3 hours.
  4. Cool and strain everything out of the liquid. Please do not leave any bones or skin in the gravy because it could cause your cat to choke.
  5. Add to your cat’s meal.
  6. Portion out the gravy to freeze or keep in the fridge for a few days if you plan on using it all.

3. Fish-Flavored Gravy

Most of us wouldn’t think about fish-flavored gravy, but your cat is sure to love it!

Make this gravy to mix with your cat’s food, whether you want to dilute wet cat food or soften dry cat food.

Ingredients

  • Fish, fresh when possible – 1 fish
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Salt – ¼ tsp.

Directions

  1. Thorough cook fish, whether you want to boil it or otherwise.
  2. Add fish to a stockpot with water. Add more water to your pot if necessary.
  3. Bring to a boil, then turn the heat down to a medium or soft boil. Place lid on stockpot and let simmer for up to 3 hours.
  4. Cool and strain everything out of the liquid. Do not leave any bones in the gravy. Your cat may enjoy the pieces of cooked fish.
  5. Add to your cat’s meal.
  6. Freeze any leftover gravy. You can leave this in the fridge, but it may start to smell sooner than other meat-based gravy recipes.

4. Pork Rib Gravy

Your cat will be the fanciest cat on the block with this pork rib gravy!

If you use the leftover meat for this recipe, don’t use ribs that you have marinated or doused in barbecue sauce. Cats do not need to eat marinade or barbecue sauce. The meat for this recipe may be better by cooking it from scratch, not using leftovers.

Ingredients

  • Rib meat, boneless – ½ pound
  • Water – 4 cups
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Cook rib meat. While you can use leftover pork rib, there is a chance that you used barbecue sauce or marinade on the meat—Cook rib meat in the oven or the crockpot.
  2. Add rib meat, water, and salt to a crockpot.
  3. Turn crockpot onto low. Cook gravy for two to four hours. The longer you cook the gravy, the softer the meat will become.
  4. Ladle the gravy into a bowl and allow it to cool.
  5. Serve on top of wet or dry cat food when cool. Refrigerate or freeze excess gravy.

5. Chicken And Carrot Gravy

A chicken and carrot gravy is a fantastic way to incorporate vegetables into your cat’s gravy. Since cats are carnivores, cats don’t need colorful vegetables as humans do. Still, some vegetables, like carrots, are a great addition to the gravy.

Ingredients

  • Chicken meat, skin removed – 1 pound
  • Carrots – 2 large carrots, skin removed
  • Chicken stock – 2 cups
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Cook chicken until it is thoroughly cooked or use meat that is already cooked.
  2. Peel and cut carrots into small pieces. Alternatively, you can use shredded carrots.
  3. Add chicken, carrots, chicken stock, and salt to the stockpot.
  4. Boil mixture on medium heat.
  5. Cook until carrots and chicken are tender, about 20 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool before serving.
  7. Carrots will not freeze well, so refrigerate this gravy and try to use it within five days of making it.

Carrots should be cut small enough to avoid any choking. Even when carrots are refrigerated, they will stay soft, so it will not pose a problem for your cat.

If you do not want your cat to eat pieces of carrot, you can alternatively use a food processor or blender to blend the chicken, carrots, and stock together.

Either option will work well.

6. Meat With Rice Gravy

Meat with rice gravy is an excellent choice if you want to make something for your cat that has a little more substance. This recipe calls for chicken meat, but you can use any choice of meat that you would like.

Ingredients

  • Chicken meat, skinless – ½ pound
  • White rice – ¼ cup
  • Chicken stock – 1 cup
  • Olive oil – 4 tsp.

Directions

  1. Cook meat. Skip this step if your meat is already cooked or if you are using leftover meat.
  2. Add chicken, rice, chicken stock, and olive oil to the pan.
  3. Boil stock on medium or low heat.
  4. Allow mixture to simmer for at least 20 minutes or until the rice has expanded and is soft.
  5. Let mixture cool to room temperature.
  6. Add to a food processor or blender and blend until it is a smooth consistency.
  7. Serve, freeze, or keep the gravy mixture in the fridge for no more than three days.

7. Egg Gravy Recipe

Egg is an excellent protein to add to any gravy dish for your cat.

Eggs are a great source of protein and fat for your cat, but like anything else, you should limit how much your cat eats.

If you’re looking to amp up gravy for your cat, think about adding a cooked egg to it. Follow these steps:

  1. Cook the gravy of your choice
  2. Hard boil an egg
  3. Peel and mash the egg
  4. Combine the egg and gravy in a food processor, which will make a nice, smooth gravy for your cat

Egg will work well in any gravy recipe, but it will work exceptionally well in any of your gravy recipes that are thicker.

Hard-boiled eggs are the easiest way to use eggs, but you can also scramble them. Always make sure that the egg is thoroughly cooked and that you do not add any seasonings.

Cat Gravy Do’s

You have flexibility when you are making gravy for your cat. Feel free to test the water and learn what your cat loves!

Keep these things in mind:

  • Do add healthy diet additions to the gravy. Use vegetables and other proteins that a cat needs in his diet.
  • Do store any leftover gravy in the freezer; it will last longer that way.
  • Do strain any significant choking hazards in your gravy.
  • Do use it as a treat, either on your cat’s food or in a bowl by itself.
  • Do ask your vet for more recommendations.
  • Do make sure that all meat is cooked thoroughly to a proper internal temperature. If it is not safe for you to eat, it is not safe for you to eat.

I don’t think you have to worry too much about doing something wrong with these recipes. While your children might turn their nose at a gravy recipe that they did not like, your cat will surely happily eat anything you give him!

Cat Gravy Don’ts

There’s a chance you could feel adventurous with your cat’s gravy. It is great to experiment, but avoid doing these things:

  • Don’t serve your cat gravy hot. Your cat will not know to let it cool and could burn their mouths.
  • Don’t keep bones or skin in the gravy when you give it to your cat. It could become a choking hazard.
  • Don’t add extra spices to the gravy-like you might your own. Your cat doesn’t need spices in his diet.
  • Don’t add anything your cat’s diet doesn’t need, like grains, oats, or any other food that is bad for cats.
  • Don’t give the gravy to your cat for every meal.
  • Don’t serve any gravy if it is getting old. Your cat can get sick from old meat or stock, just like you.

Any gravy is going to be a special treat for your cat. If you keep it healthy for your cat, then you’ll be making a good diet fun!

Serving Gravy To Your Cat

Your cat’s gravy can be served in several ways, which you can decide.

Here are some ideas of ways that you can serve your cat’s gravy, whether it is made out of chicken, pork, or anything else:

  • On wet food
  • On dry food
  • In a bowl with nothing else
  • Ladled over other pieces of plain meat.

This gravy is nice because you can use it in so many ways. However, remember that this gravy should not replace any of your cat’s regular meals. It is not a substitute for any foods that your cat needs to stay healthy and strong.

Since these gravies use ingredients sparingly, any of your animals can eat this, including cats with a more sensitive stomach and even your dogs. It might taste a little plain, but you could even eat it!

Saving Gravy To Feed To Your Cat Later

Most of the recipes we’ve covered make a massive amount of gravy, especially if you only have one cat at home.

Even if you have three or four cats, the amount of gravy would still last for more than a few servings.

One option you have is to cut the quantities in the recipes to make less gravy for your cat. These recipes are great because they can easily be tailored to what you are looking for. No worries about ruining a recipe here!

There are ways to save the gravy if you want to make a larger quantity, though.

The gravy on its own will last for about three days in the fridge. Depending on the freshness of the meat you used in the recipe, it could last for up to five days. It is the chicken stock that tends to go bad first. Don’t push the time too long, though, because you may make your cat sick.

You have another option too, which is to freeze it. You can freeze it in one large bowl or a few smaller containers.

Alternatively, you can also freeze it in an ice cube tray. This will give you smaller portions that are the perfect size for your cat.

Freezing your gravy means that you will be able to save it for up to three or four months (or longer!).

Happy cooking!
