When your cat gets up, the last thing you want to see is a spot – brown or otherwise – left behind. Before you get too grossed out, stop and ask yourself why your cat is leaving brown spots on the bed.

Brown spots mean that there is a problem with your cat’s anal glands, but you should also take a look at other colored spots your cat may leave behind. Each can tell you something important about your cat’s health. 

No one wants to see that something is dripping out of their cat, but you should pay attention to it when it happens. Brown is one color that you’ll see most often, but we’ll talk about other colors too, like red and yellow. Keep reading to learn more (even if you want to turn a blind eye!). 

Why Is My Cat Leaking Brown Fluid

Brown fluid leaking from your cat usually means something wrong with your cat’s anal glands.

If you’re like me, you may have never heard the term “anal glands” until something was wrong with your pet.

I heard this term when my dog’s anal glands were leaking and making a horrible smell in the house. I never smelled anything as awful as this – I would surely take the scent of a skunk over the smell of that. 

When cats poop, the anal glands release a small amount of fluid, but an infection can possibly set in.

Infected anal glands will need to be taken care of by your vet as soon as possible.

As I mentioned in my story about my dog, it can smell bad and even begin to leak wherever your cat sits.

In addition to creating a mess wherever your cat is, it can also be painful or uncomfortable for your cat.

Why Is My Cat Leaving Poop Stains

Most cats won’t commonly leave poop stains, but it happens most often with cats who have long fur. 

Cats with long fur will be the culprits of poop stains on the bed. 

Pieces of poop can get trapped in your cat’s long fur. If your cat doesn’t notice the poop matted into its fur, it can leave poop stains around the house.

One of the easiest ways to combat this from happening is to trim the fur around your cat’s butt and under his tail.

Shorter fur means that this will not happen as often. 

Why Is My Cat Leaking Poop

Diarrhea could be one of the major culprits when your cat leaks poop. 

Although it might seem obvious, diarrhea is one of the possible reasons your cat is leaking and leaving spots on the bed.

Most of us know diarrhea happens when we are on the toilet, but cats may not be able to stop leaking if they are unwell. 

Since your cat is not feeling well, you don’t want to start yelling at your cat. Getting upset will not solve anything.

Instead, consider putting down an old towel or blanket for your cat to sleep on during the night. It won’t fix the problem that your cat’s problem, but it will save your sheets at least!

Also, make sure that your cat has easy access to fresh water and a clean litter box to use if he needs it. 

Do Cats Bleed While In Heat

Female cats, unlike humans, do not bleed while in heat, so there may be a different issue that your cat is having.

If you see blood spots from your female cat, you may think that your cat has her period just like a female human might, but this is not true because cats do not have periods. Bleeding is not common in female cats, whether in heat or not. 

While in heat, your cat will become more affectionate and demanding, but there should not be a presence of blood. 

In the same respect, male cats also do not bleed while in heat, but people are less likely to assume that male cats will bleed while in heat. 

I don’t want to alarm you, but any bleeding from your cat – whether they are in heat or not – is abnormal and should be investigated. 

Why Is My Cat Leaving Blood Spots

Since your cat isn’t bleeding because they are in heat, we need to look at some of the other concerns that there may be. 

Some of the reasons that your male or female cat is bleeding are:

• Blood clotting issue
• Constipation
• Cancer or tumors 
• Infection in her anal glands, which can also lead to your cat leaking brown fluid

You should take any bleeding from your cat seriously and speak with your vet as soon as possible. 

The earlier you catch any issues with your cat, you will have more time to treat your cat’s illness properly. 

Why Does My Cat Leave Yellow Spots

Your cat is leaving yellow spots on the bed because he struggles with incontinence. 

When your cat is a kitten and even an adult, wetting the bed when he stands up isn’t something you need to worry about. As your cat gets older and becomes a senior cat, then incontinence is a more significant issue you will need to contend with. 

You may notice that your cat is starting to leave small yellow spots when he gets up, which are small urine drips.

Your cat won’t release the entire contents of his bladder even if he is incontinent, but it is still enough pee that you may be able to smell the unpleasant odor. 

Why Is My Cat Leaving Tiny Black Spots

Tiny black spots are some of the most common to fall out of your cat, and they usually mean that your cat has fleas.

When your cat gets off a light-colored blanket, you may be shocked and slightly disgusted to see tiny black specks left behind. 

These tiny black dots are what many people call “flea dirt.”

Flea dirt is what fleas poop out when they feed on your cat’s blood. They do not stick to your cat, so they fall off.

Spotting flea dirt is disgusting, but it is a great alert to tell you that your cat has fleas. 

That way, you can take steps to treat your cat and his fleas.
