One of the easiest meals that people like to whip up is a hot dog. Maybe a little bit of ketchup and mustard on the top. Like any other meal you prepare, your cat may have its eyes on it, but you’re always hesitating to give your cat a hot dog. You always wonder, can cats eat hot dogs?
Cats cannot eat hot dogs. Hot dogs contain additional ingredients that make them unhealthy for cats to eat and difficult to digest. High levels of salt, spices, starch, sugar, and corn syrup are all ingredients in hot dogs that can be harmful to cats.

What Are Hot Dogs Made Of
Hot dogs are a popular option for many Americans, and you should know what’s inside of them.
Hot dogs are made out of a base protein, like beef or pork. They can also be made out of turkey or poultry, but we won’t worry about those kinds of hot dogs right now.
Here are some additional ingredients that will be ground together with the protein:
- Water
- Spice mixtures, depending on the brand and kind of hot dog
- Beef or chicken stock, again depending on the kind of hot dog
- Salt (and lots of it)
- Sugar
- Corn syrup
- Starch
A quick look at those ingredients and it’s probably clear that it’s not designed for a cat to consume at any level. The spices, salt, corn syrup, and starch are particularly concerning. These are not ingredients that you’ll find in large amounts in any type of cat food. Hot dogs contain high amounts of each (more on this in the next section), and to a degree, your cat can become poisoned by it.
For more of us, we think of it as just a meat snack. But hot dogs are considerably more than that. It’s actually a mixture of meats and spices and other ingredients rolled together.
Once everything is mixed together, the mixture is pumped into casings, which may or may not need to be removed before consumption.
The hot dogs will be smoked and cooked before being packaged. After being heated up at home, most hot dogs that you purchase at the store will be ready to eat.
Is It OK To Give Cats Hot Dogs
It isn’t okay to give cats hot dogs.
Hot dogs aren’t great for humans, and they certainly aren’t suitable for cats either.
There are tons of things in hot dogs that your cat should avoid, such as:
- Salt
- Fat
- Additional additives for flavor, like garlic or cheese
- The skin of the casing
- Toppings that you may add, like ketchup, mustard, onions, or chili
If hot dogs were only meat, they wouldn’t be so bad for your cat, but that’s not what hot dogs are nowadays.
Hot dogs also contain many preservatives that keep them fresh longer, which is also a bad addition to your cat’s diet.
The salt content is especially concerning. A basic hot dog contains about 567mg of salt! That’s an incredible increase over what a cat should consume daily; which is 21 – 43mg of salt per serving.
The fat content in hot dogs is pretty significant as well. You can expect around 13g of total fat per hot dog. Depending on the brand, that can increase to 19g of fat.
Additives are also a problem. Too many mixed-up flavors can actually cause cats to feel sick. In addition, some additives such as garlic are poisonous to cats and they should not consume them under any circumstances.
Hot dogs can also be covered in preservatives to keep them fresh longer. Unfortunately, those ingredients can be really harmful to cats; especially the sodium nitrate content.
Also, keep in mind some hot dogs have casings that need to be peeled off. You certainly don’t want a cat to consume that as they are not edible, and the plastic can seriously harm them.
Typically, when you eat a hot dog you like to add all the toppings. Things like ketchup, mustard, even onions are terrible ingredients to have a cat consume. Add in the bread which is loaded with sugar and carbs, and allowing your cat to even sample that is only asking for trouble.
What Happens If Cats Eat Hot Dogs
One bite of a hot dog won’t hurt your cat, but prolonged eating can lead to numerous issues with your cat.
One of your main concerns should be the amount of salt that is found in hot dogs. Even low sodium hot dogs have more salt in them than a cat should be eating.
Your cat can get dehydrated by overeating hot dog and salt. Cats don’t always understand that they are dehydrated so that they can get tired and dizzy. You may notice that your cat isn’t acting like himself if he is dehydrated.
A step worse than dehydration is sodium poisoning. Now, this should only be a concern if your cat is eating hot dogs all the time.
Hot dogs have much more salt than your cat should ever be eating, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it will lead to adverse effects on your cat.
Sodium poisoning can lead to a host of issues like:
- High blood pressure
- Prolonged dehydration
- Lethargy
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Again, these are concerns that arise when your cat is eating hot dogs all the time, so be aware of what your cat is eating!
Can Cats Eat Turkey Hot Dogs
If you are between regular hot dogs and turkey hot dogs, turkey hot dogs are the better option, but they are still not healthy for your cat.
Compared to traditional hot dogs, turkey hot dogs are more heart-healthy because they contain less salt. This, however, is when you are thinking about the human diet.
At even a third of the amount of salt in beef hot dogs, turkey hot dogs still have more salt than the average cat should have in their diet.
A turkey hot dog is an alright one-off snack if you want to share with your cat, but there still are not enough health benefits for a turkey hot dog to become part of your cat’s regular diet.
Can Stray Cats Eat Hot Dogs
People are under the impression that stray cats can eat lower-quality foods than indoor cats. While that may be true, stray cats shouldn’t eat hot dogs either.
Stray cats may have stronger stomachs than your indoor cat that only eats wet and dry cat food designed specifically for them.
After all, stray cats need to eat what they can to survive, including live animals, garbage, and old cat food that you may have left outside.
Hot dogs pose the same problems for stray cats as they do for indoor cats that you own.
If a stray cat is between starvation and eating a hot dog that they find in the trash, they may choose to eat the hot dog.
As a concerned person taking care of stray cats outside, you shouldn’t choose to give them hot dogs for a meal.
